A loaded gun was discovered in a student's backpack at Mt. Healthy Jr./Sr. High School Thursday, school officials said.
It was found when school officials were doing a routine check.
In a statement, the district said school staff noticed students passing a vape and took them both into an office where their bags were searched.
During the search, school officials found a loaded firearm in one student's bag.
"At no point was the weapon displayed or used to threaten anyone on campus," the district said in a statement.
Mt. Healthy Police was called in and district officials said the student was taken out of school.
"Since this situation was contained and did not pose an active threat, there was no need to initiate a lockdown or change the day's schedule," the district said, "We understand that news of a firearm on campus is unsettling. Our commitment is to provide a safe, secure environment for all students, and we take this responsibility seriously."
The district said any parents who want to pick their child up early from school will need to make sure whoever is picking them up is on a designated pick-up list and brings a valid ID.
