Looking for an easy way to update your wardrobe for the new season? Changing your handbag is the easiest way to do so—a simple swap can instantly make an old pair of jeans or everyday jacket feel brand new. Not to mention that no other fashion item retains their value quite like a purse, so it's a good category to invest in. But with so many options out there, how do you choose the right one—and how do you style it? We asked fashion stylists and handbag experts about the top handbag trends for fall 2024, from shapes and designs to colors and textures.

The hobo style is hotter than ever this season, according to celebrity fashion stylist Brooke Rounick. “Oversized hobo bags are trending with the revival of bohemian style, featuring slouchy shapes that provide ample space for daily essentials,” she says. “They pair beautifully with flowy blouses and dresses, as well as vintage denim, perfecting a laid-back yet chic aesthetic.”

Lindsey Bernay, stylist and author of You Can't Leave the House Naked, suggests pairing hobo bags with relaxed jeans, a flattering white button-down, and a pair of loafers or mules. “Think Jane Birkin street style.”

Are you looking for a timeless style bag you can take from work to happy hour? A tote bag will check every box. And while you can use a tote bag season after season, this style is particularly on trend right now. “Tote bags make for the perfect fall staple, with their blend of functionality and style. Toss in your work essentials or goodies for a weekend getaway, and you’re set,” says Bernay. “Style your tote with a cozy cashmere sweater, slim cigarette trousers, and a fitted longline blazer for a modern and elegant travel look.”

If totes aren’t your thing, fashion stylist Christina Adamo suggests a bowling bag. “A bowling bag or top-handle bag is an updated alternative to the traditional work tote. These are perfect workhorse bags—meant to be used day in and day out. Wear it with a floor-grazing coat, structured blazer, and slingbacks or loafers."

Lady bags are having a moment. Don't hesitate if you’re thinking about splurging because Rounick says these timeless bags are worth the investment. “It’s demure elegance and timeless style. With its structured silhouette and sophisticated details, this bag effortlessly complements both casual and formal outfits."

For a daytime look, dress it down with high-waisted dark denim jeans, a soft knit sweater, and a pair of loafers.

Who says good things don’t come in small packages? “The mini bag is the perfect way to add interest to your outfit—think of it as arm candy! Whether it’s a top-handle vanity or a wristlet, you can wear it for any occasion (as long as you don’t need to worry about carrying anything substantial),” says Adamo. “It would pair perfectly when you’re trying to elevate your outfit—style it with a maxi skirt, slinky top, and over-the-knee boots for date night.”

"Chocolate brown is back this fall and continues to feel luxurious and expensive," says Emily Hayward, associate VP at Minor History. "A warmer neutral than gray or black, this particular shade of brown is ideal for the cooler seasons. Leveraging chocolate brown handbags is a way to embrace the trend in a small but impactful way."

Not sure which material to go for? Rounick says you can’t go wrong with suede. “Whether you're dressing up a simple jeans-and-tee combo or a tonal brown ensemble, the brown suede bag is currently sweeping through the fashion scene. The rich, warm hue of brown suede adds a touch of earthiness to any outfit, making it a versatile staple for every occasion."

Thinking about choosing any of these styles in a fresh color? Hayward says burgundy is a must-wear hue for fall. “This moody but reliable color takes a leap from the bold red that championed last season and anchors both casual and more formal looks. It exudes refined elegance, and bags in this color elevate any look with a touch of sophistication."
