SPRINGFIELD — Shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday, as temperatures were dropping, David Kurpewski told his daughter he heard a strange mewling sound outside.

At first they believed the cries could have come from another apartment in the six-unit building at 1083 Worthington St.
